Thomas Worrall. Bookseller. At ye Judges-Head (c. 1730)
Thomas Worrall was a bookseller and publisher from 1729 to 1767,
brother to John Worrall, a well-known publisher. Thomas Worrall became
insane and died in 1766. His sign commemorates Sir Edward Coke
(1552-1634), who led the defence for many celebrated cases (among them
Cromwell v. Denny in 1579 and the Shelley real property case in
1581). He also led the prosecution in the trials of Essex and Southampton
(1600), Sir Walter Raleigh (1603) and the Gunpowder plotters (1605).
Although he was a rather contentious figure, he held various high offices,
including speaker of the House of Commons and Chief Justice of the King’s
Bench.
