A. and C. Corbett. Booksellers. At Addison’s head (1752-71)
Three heads are included in this trade card, that of the shop’s sign
(Joseph Addison) and also those of Dryden and Shakespeare. Charles Corbett was
at this address from c. 1752 to 1771. He was a bookseller, publisher (of
the Whitehall Evening Post, which his father had founded) and owner of a
lottery office. In 1776 he was forced to give up his business, ruined by the
sale of a £20,000 lottery ticket. His later life was spent in penury. He was
made a Baronet in 1774 and worked occasionally as a journeyman binder, dying in
1808.
