Inn bills, or ‘bar bills’ as they are known, were commonly engraved as pro-formas. The hand-colouring of Thomas Carnelley’s bill heading and of the Circulating Library label is very unusual. It is possible that this was done by the printer, but also possible that the families of Thomas Carnelley or of Chapman coloured the illustrations.
