Robert Bull. Smith & Wright. Leith (c. 1750-60)
Robert Bull’s tradesman’s list is very elaborate, with a border
illustrating various of the agricultural and horticultural implements he made in
his dual capacity as smith and wright. It is also unusual in giving prices. The
text below the border makes it clear that this list is not comprehensive, but
rather a sample. Not surprisingly, with such an elaborate item, the engraver, T.
Smith of Edinburgh, has signed his work. The rococo frames enclosing some of the
depictions of implements suggest a date of c. 1750-60 and a wish to be
fashionable.
