Philips and Atkinson. Oilmen (1766)
The tradesman’s list of Philips and Atkinson is an example of
letterpress printing and engraving being used on the same sheet. The verso
has a bill heading and takes the opportunity of inverting the names in the
partnership (Atkinson & Philips) to suggest their equality.
Alternatively, use could have been made of old bill headings, printed for
Mr Atkinson senior, by printing a tradesman’s list on the clean side. In
either case, the manuscript of the bill on the verso dates the use of the
item to 1774. The list itself is of interest in defining the scope of the
‘Oilman.’ Many imported goods are listed – from Italy, France,
Russia, Westphalia, Holland and India. The bill also contains one of the
relatively few references to export (of cases of pickles) in trade
ephemera of this period.
