William Rogers. Jeweller and Goldsmith. Bath (c. 1780)
The trade card of William Rogers of Bath makes two references to
London, one to establish his credentials as coming from Mr Chad, in New
Bond-street, the other to state that his prices, to shopkeepers at least,
equated with those of London. This is common in trade cards and implies
that London prices were cheaper than in the provinces. Many provincial
tradesmen were anxious to contradict this idea in their cards. Dutch and
English ‘toys’ were trinkets or ornaments in gold and silver, not
juvenilia.
