Bot. of Anne Pilton. Wire-Worker (1812)

Some unusual occupations for women were had by Margaret Smith, chaser, who made coffin plates, Mary Alderson who was a pewterer, and Anne Pilton who was a wire-worker. It is not clear from their trade cards and bill headings whether they themselves undertook these trades. Certainly goldsmiths’ daughters were often trained by their fathers in chasing (embossing or engraving in relief), although of a more delicate variety than that used on coffin plates.
