Since it was common for women to operate in the booktrade, Margaret Sweetland would have been expected to take over the business after the death of her husband Abel in 1787. Her trade card dates from c. 1790 and performs the function of a label, which accounts for the less extensive list of wares than on her husband’s trade card.
