Bot. of John Howard. Ironmonger, Iron & Brass Founder, Locksmith,
Bell Hanger & Brazier. Iron, Zinc & Tin Plate Worker, Brick, Tile
& Lime Burner & Garden Pot Manufacturer. Bedford (Xmas 1838)
(both)
The bill headings of John Howard show both his retail premises and his
foundry. The depiction of the foundry is less idealised than some, with
copious black smoke billowing from the chimneys and the load for the wagon
in some disarray in the courtyard. The shop (or warehouse) appears to be
elegant, however, with the window display being admired by a fashionable
couple. It is notable that the (signed) engraving was made in London by a
well-known firm of engravers, rather than locally. Other examples of the
work of Reeves and Hoare are at nos. 65 and 331.
John Howard’s bill heading is unusual for the very detailed
description of his wares and the breadth of his work in all types of
metalworking.
