Any indication of what shops and streets looked like before being destroyed by bombing in the Second World War are always of interest to local historians. Neither G. Dowman’s premises nor those of C. White survived the war. Dowman’s card shows much of Southampton’s pre-war High Street, with the Bargate (which still exists) visible at the far end.
