Hay’s wharf, Southwark. For Leeds, the Fleece (1826, altered in manuscript to 1827)

The John Johnson Collection has a number of shipping bills, which show the coastal routes from the London ports. The Fleece (for Leeds) serves 54 cities and towns. Virtually the whole country could be reached in this way, with the canal network taking much of the produce onwards to their destinations.

Examples of other routes were:

‘Dover for Sandgate, Lydd, Deal, Hythe, Elham, Walmer, Dymchurch, Folkestone, Barham, Romney’, and ‘Exeter and Topsham, Alphington, Ashburton, Barnstaple, Bideford, Bovey-Tracey, Barkham, Bradnich, Bridgewater, Buckland, Broadclift, Crediton, Chudleigh, Chumleigh, Crockernwell, Colyton, Collumpton, Dawlish, Dulverton, Exeter, Exmouth, Holdsworthy, Honiton, Ippleden, Kingsteinton, Kingsnympton, Kenton, Lympstone, Morton Hampsted, North Tawton, Oakhampton, Runnington, Sandford, Silverton, Star-Cross, Southmoulton, Sidmouth, St. Mary Ottery, Tiverton, Taunton, Torrington, Topsham, Teignmouth, Thorverton, Torr-Abbey, Wellington, Wivelscombe, Wilstone and all places adjacent’.
