John Cuff. Optician, Spectacle, and Microscope Maker. At the Sign of the
Reflecting Microscope and Spectacles. c. 1742
The trade card or advertisement of John Cuff (c. 1708-72) is
fascinating for its description of optical instruments and their functions. John
Cuff’s solar microscope, which made use of the sun’s rays to project an
image, was described in Henry Baker’s The Microscope Made Easy, 1742.
His sign had a painted board showing the reflecting microscope with three
three-dimensional pairs of spectacles alongside, as suggested on his
advertisement.
