Mathews [dealer in] Music, Musical Instruments, Stationary [sic] Wares,
Perfumery, Mathematical Instruments…
William Mathews, whose music shop was in the High Street from c.1769
to 1790, was also a stationer and a seller of perfumery, Dutch and English toys,
mathematical instruments, patent medicines, Birmingham and Sheffield wares,
canes, combs, etc. He also published some music. Mathews’ trade card is
adorned with masonic symbols as well as with musical instruments.
