William Seward. Golden Cross. Commercial Inn. Oxford
The Golden Cross was one of the principal inns in Oxford; dating back to c.
1193 as an inn, it had various owners until c. 1388 when it was acquired
by New College. In the 16th century the inn was used for performances
by travelling players. It is thought that Shakespeare stayed there. In 1825 the
freehold was sold to a syndicate including the builder Thomas Wyatt and the
solicitor Henry Walsh. After this it changed hands many times. Nothing now
remains of the original building.
This card was engraved by the Birmingham firm of Smith & Greaves.
