Mapping the World

Geographic Coverage

The project aims to cover a large part of Western Europe, Central and South America, India, North Africa and the Middle East as well as maps of the World for post-1850 holdings.  Each of the partners will initially concentrate on different geographic areas in order to increase coverage.  At a later stage, each institution will be able to benefit from the core of records created by another library for countries in which they also have holdings. To increase the currency and relevance of Mapping the World, the partners will also be giving priority to countries that make the political headlines during the duration of the project (e.g. Afghanistan). The former Soviet Union will not be covered in any detail as part of this retrospective conversion.

By July 2002, the holdings of six of the partner libraries had been covered for the following countries:
in Africa: Algeria, Botswana, Congo (Democratic Republic), Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan and Zimbabwe;
in the Middle East: Iran, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia;  in South America: Chile, Guyana and Uruguay; and Australia.

In some partner libraries, holdings for an individual country may be very small (less than 10 maps)
compared to the holdings of the Copyright deposit libraries.
