The National Preservation Office (NPO) Preservation Assessment Survey was adopted and adapted for use in this project as a means of becoming familiar with the nature of oriental collections. Although preservation-based the survey proved invaluable as an introduction to the different artefacts and formats found in such collections. Moreover, the survey facilitated the identification of both preservation and conservation issues associated with this type of material, such as handling, storage, protection, common forms of damage, poor repairs, condition, usability, and areas for further conservation research. A full description of the NPO survey and its methodology can be found in the publication, A Model for Assessing Preservation Needs in Libraries, obtainable from the NPO: |
