Closure of the New Bodleian Reading Room (NBRR) - relocation of the MAP ROOM

The Bodleian Library Map Room is to be relocated in anticipation of the major refurbishment of the New Bodleian Library building, due to take place over the next five years.

Maps reference material has been moved to Duke Humfrey’s Library in the Old Bodleian over the past few weeks, although the most of the maps themselves continue to be consulted in the NBRR.

The NBRR will finally close on Saturday 11th September and the move of furniture and remaining equipment will be completed in the week beginning 13th September, during which time Duke Humfrey’s Library will also need to be closed for a period during which time the Bodleian's Map service will become temporarily unavailable.

From Monday 20th September, all Map material currently read in the NBRR will need to be ordered to and read in Duke Humfrey’s Library.

The movement of Maps open-shelf material should help to minimise the period during which the reading rooms will be closed entirely but will mean that, for a short period, readers visiting the Library may have to use two reading rooms in order to consult the material they need. Library staff will endeavour to keep OLIS updated with the latest location information but it is recommended that readers contact Library staff in advance of their visit for advice.

Special Collections

Readers wishing to consult manuscript Maps and rare atlases will continue to be directed to the temporary Special Collections Reading Room at the Radcliffe Science Library.
